Destigmatizing Mental Health in the African American Community: Suicide Rates and Prevention

CE Hours 1

About this course

Receiving mental health treatment in the African American community has historically been a taboo topic. Black people don't "need" therapy; struggles are to be powered through and/or prayed about. We definitely don't put "other folks" in the family business! Destigmatizing receiving mental health care is central to uprooting deep-seated beliefs that reinforce generational trauma in Black households. Carrying stress, depression, and anxiety in silence influences suicide rates. Let's open up a discussion on mental health in the African American community and discuss not only mental health in general, but prevention measures against suicide rates in the Black community.

Learning Objectives

  • Discuss the historical and cultural factors contributing to the stigma surrounding mental health treatment in the African American community and how these factors impact individuals’ willingness to seek care.
  • Explore the relationship between mental health assessments, diagnostic labels, and their implications for treatment within the Black community, while addressing the role of culturally competent care.
  • Analyze suicide rates and statistics within the African American community, and provide actionable resources and prevention strategies to reduce these rates and promote mental wellness.
