Neurodiversity & Eating Disorders

CE Hours 2

About this course

This training will provide an introductory overview of eating disorders, neurodiversity, and important considerations for working clinically with neurodivergent individuals with eating disorders. Participants will learn about some common eating disorder diagnoses and treatment approaches, as well as some ways that neurodivergence can increase the risk of disordered eating and impact recovery outcomes. They will have an opportunity to explore and discuss what neurodiversity affirming eating disorder care means and strategies for implementing this. This presentation is informed by the Health At Every Size framework and disability justice principles.

Learning Objectives

  • Participants will be able to define the Health At Every Size paradigm and explain why it is an important underpinning of eating disorder treatment approaches.
  • Participants will be able to articulate the principles of the neurodiversity paradigm and how this paradigm differs from conventional therapy modalities.
  • Participants will be able to name at least three ways that neurodivergence and the ableism that neurodivergent people experience can increase the risk of disordered eating.
