Suicide Prevention for Therapists: Awareness, Intervention, and Planning

CE Hours 1

About this course

This continuing education training equips therapists with practical, evidence-based tools to recognize and respond to suicide risk—both in their clients and within their professional community. Drawing from the QPR (Question, Persuade, Refer) framework, this session focuses on the unique challenges and responsibilities therapists face when navigating suicide risk. We’ll explore strategies for effective risk assessment, safety planning, and referral, while also addressing provider well-being, vicarious trauma, and how to support fellow clinicians in distress. The training offers actionable steps therapists can take when working with clients experiencing suicidal ideation.

Learning Objectives

  • Analyze the ethical and legal nuances of managing suicide risk within the therapeutic alliance and articulate a collaborative, documentation-based risk management strategy.
  • Apply the Stanley-Brown Safety Planning Intervention to collaboratively create a multi-step suicide care plan with a client.
  • Synthesize the QPR (Question, Persuade, Refer) framework and utilize it as a psychoeducational tool to empower clients to support their own social networks.
  • Formulate a multi-layered self-care and peer support plan to mitigate the effects of vicarious trauma and burnout within their professional community.
